Two Charged with First-Degree Murder and Child Abuse in Death of Memphis Infant

Memphis, TN — Two individuals have been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse following the tragic death of a 1-year-old girl, according to the Memphis Police Department. The baby was pronounced dead early Saturday morning at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

The incident began around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday when Memphis Police were alerted to a child in cardiac arrest at the hospital. The baby, who had been under the care of Dejon Smith and Kiya Moore since Thursday evening, was pronounced dead at 4:01 a.m. following resuscitation efforts.

Upon examining the child’s body, doctors discovered severe injuries, including a skull and neck fracture, extensive bruising on her back, and signs of rectal trauma. Authorities believe these injuries were inflicted during the time the child was in the care of Smith and Moore.

Smith and Moore are now facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. The case has drawn significant attention and underscores the urgent need to protect vulnerable children.

The investigation is ongoing, and both suspects remain in custody. Further details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through the legal system.
