For most of us getting a tax rebate for even a small amount is cause for celebration.
So imagine one woman’s surprise when she was told a refund cheque for $200million was in the post.
Denise Bossetti, of Huron, Ohio, was sent a letter in January by the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) saying the £200million refund could not be paid directly into her bank account.
Instead she could expect a cheque for the amount.
‘I thought, ‘They are going to have a big negative when they cut that cheque,’ Ms Bossetti told Sandusky Register.
She also had a chuckle with her boyfriend Charlie Dise about the obvious error.
‘I kept saying to Charlie, “What’s it like to live with someone with $200million?” He said: “Let’s wait till we get the cheque.”‘
Sadly the cheque never materialised. Instead Ms Bossetti received another letter a week later explaining there had been a software error at the department.
Ms Bossetti was among 9,700 taxpayers statewide who received rebate notices promising mega refunds, according to the Register,
It is not clear if the other amounts were as big as $200million however.
Gary Gudmundson, a spokesman for the Ohio Tax Department, said the problem had now been fixed.
