KINGSTON, Jamaica – The parents of a toddler whose decomposing remains were found in a suitcase in Jamaica have been declared fit to stand trial.
The couple, who four years ago admitted to abandoning their infant daughter — later nicknamed Angelica — in a freezing Toronto stairwell appeared in a Jamaican court today after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
Supt. Steve Brown of the Jamaica Constabulary Force says the evaluation “revealed that they are fit to plea.”
They were remanded until March 2, when they are expected to enter a plea and can apply for bail.
The couple was charged with failing to bury a body as well as concealing the death of the two-year-old after neighbours discovered the boy’s partially mummified remains in the couple’s home.
A pathology report suggests the toddler likely died from disease, asphyxiation or poisoning, but added it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of death due to advanced decomposition.
