The Associated Press is reporting that the USGS has issued a new tsunami warning for the eastern coast of Japan, following a 6.5 magnitude earthquake today.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that a tsunami of up to 1.6 feet may wash into Miyagi Prefecture.
The tsunami alert was issued only for Japan.
The alert was prompted by a quake that the USGS measured at 7:23 a.m. Monday Japan time near the east coast of Honshu. According to the USGS, the quake was 3.7 miles deep.
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 quake off of off Japan‘s northeast coast triggered a massive tsunami that is believed to have killed over 18,000 people.
Our prayers go out to the Japanese people.
