A 31-year-old man has been charged after his ex-girlfriend accused him of physically and sexually assaulting her while holding her captive in her own Denver home for two months.
The 32-year-old woman reportedly escaped her alleged captor, ex-boyfriend Eric Bernard Barney Jr, two weeks ago and called her brother for help, according to an arrest affidavit.
The victim was taken to a hospital where doctors found she had two broken ribs, a broken nose and visible bruising on her face.
The pair had dated for five months.
Court records show police met the victim on July 25, after hospital staff reported a patient who was badly beaten, had a broken nose and required stitches for cuts to her face.
Local news station KWGN reports the victim told police Barney had tried to kill her by strangling her and smothering her with a pillow.
