GRIND 101: DJ Jay Skillz

The Heir Apparent, DJ Jay Skillz

Plain and simple, the love of music comes from the heart.  It’s not a learned behavior – it’s in the blood – just like dedication and perseverance to an artist’s craft.

Enter DJ Jay Skillz, host of B.S. Radio every Wednesday from 7-10 p.m. on Crescent City Radio, where he uses the venue as a platform for showcasing up and coming talent from New Orleans and beyond.

DJ Jay Skillz started off his career rapping, but soon found that his talents were so much broader.  Born in New Orleans and raised in Houston, Skillz brings to his chosen profession a unique knowledge of southern music and the artists that bless the South.

As a freshman at New Orleans’ Dillard University, he worked alongside inThe Legendary Mike Swift at WDUB. He assumed more responsibilities that included being Music Director, until Hurricane Katrina struck the city. Following Katrina, Skillz relocated to San Antonio, Texas where he spent a semester at UT, prior to returning to New Orleans.

It was upon his return to New Orleans that Skillz set out on a quest to become a DJ, with the help of Mike Swift. It wasn’t long before he was DJ’ing parties and putting out mixtapes, including I’m Just Screwing Around & the critically acclaimed Got The Drawers Screw R&B series, now moving into its fourth chapter.  He is currently working on The Peep Show, an R&B mixtape, Unrestricted Free Agents Vol. 2 and several other projects.

Skillz has a goal of being one of the greatest DJs to ever live – and with a work ethic and dedication like his, it won’t be long before he climbs to the top of that list.

Be on the lookout for this rising star who’s a member of the Definition DJs, FutureStar DJs and the 4 Horsemen, as well as being R&B star Rantz Davis’ official DJ.

The Heat Magazine salutes Jay Skillz for his efforts to help up and coming artists and we wish him well in all of his endeavors.
