A Southern California family is suing Disneyland because of actions by a cast member that they claim were racist.
“I was going to hug him, but he turned his back,” said 6-year-old Jason Black, referring to the rabbit character from “Alice in Wonderland.”
“The rabbit was turning his back on me,” 9-year-old Elijah Black recalled. “Then I went up to try to hold his hand, but he kept on flicking my hand off.”
The family claims that the cast member in the rabbit costume discriminated against their children because they were black.
“Our first instinct was okay, maybe they have new policies, maybe they aren’t supposed to touch the kids,” dad Jason Black Sr. said.
According to the family, the rabbit interacted with other white children.
“There was two other kids that came up, and the rabbit showered them… hugged them, kissed them, posed with them and took pictures. Meanwhile, that made my kids feel horrible.”
The family said they went to the management office to complain, and were offered VIP passes, but they declined because the children were so upset.
Instead, they’re asking Disney to publicly apologize and terminate the employee in the rabbit suit.
The family is now asking for surveillance video to prove their claims. Disney has yet to respond to the request.
