Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie Brings Hope and Joy to Ward One with Clothing and Food Giveaway

An inspiring partnership with Valero owners and community leaders spreads holiday cheer and support in College Park.

On December 22, 2024, I had the privilege of volunteering at a heartwarming and joyous event at the Valero gas station, located at 3293 Main Street, College Park, Georgia. The clothing and food giveaway was a shining example of holiday generosity and community spirit, uniting leaders, organizations, and residents to make a meaningful impact on Ward One.

The event was a success thanks to Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie, who brought together key partners, including Rahim S. Kassam, the new owner of the Valero gas station, his two business partners, the College Park Police Department, the “Outstanding” Omicron Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Ignite Resource Center. Councilwoman McKenzie personally contributed coats and gloves and helped facilitate the participation of each group, ensuring the event was a success for the community.

Guests received essentials such as personal hygiene items, clothing, sweaters, shoes, socks, and coats, while enjoying free tropical food, including chicken curry with cabbage, rice, and peas. A lively DJ kept the crowd energized throughout the day, creating a festive and uplifting atmosphere.

The Valero team played a key role, with Mr. Kassam and his business partners generously giving away 8,500 gallons of gas, offering families a 30-cent discount per gallon until the tanks ran dry, and serving 200 plates of food. Their generosity extended far beyond material support, making a significant impact on the lives of families during this holiday season.

Adding to the energy and spirit of the day were the women of the “Outstanding” Omicron Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., based in College Park. These remarkable women, alongside Ignite Resource Center’s contributions of hygiene items and clothing, ensured that attendees left with not only essentials but also a renewed sense of hope.

One of the most heartwarming moments was seeing College Park police officers out on the dance floor, sharing joyful moments with community members and sorority sisters. Their participation added to the festive atmosphere, making the event feel like a true celebration of unity and care.

Councilwoman McKenzie’s ability to bring together such a diverse group of collaborators demonstrates her commitment to creating opportunities for collective impact in Ward One. While she humbly collaborated with key partners, her leadership was central in uniting everyone for this meaningful cause.

As a volunteer, I witnessed firsthand how this event embodied the true spirit of the season—generosity, joy, and connection. It was more than an event; it was a testament to the power of collaboration and the strength of the College Park community.
