A-kon Interview: Brent Black “brentalfloss” Part 1

Brent Black or brentalfloss as he plays on YouTube is an internet celebrity and he got there by taking 8 bit music from his favorite games and writing lyrics for them. His videos have been featured on G4tv’s Attack of the Show multiple times. He has started touring the country with his band and stopping to perform at various venues. I caught up with him at A-kon 23 where he sat down with me and answered a few of my questions.

James Arledge – When you started on YouTube did you ever think you would end up where you are today?

Brent Black – No, I didn’t think I would end up where I am from YouTube….where I am today is very specific. It’s a level of internet cult fame, It’s not a super wide audience but it is deep. For instance, there are YouTubers that have five or ten times as many subscribers as me, but it’s kinda like hard core gamer versus casual gamer, I feel that even though my audience isn’t as big they are much more “hardcore” rather than a “casual” audience.

JA -They are more concentrated.

BB – Right. To answer your question, I always wanted to be important or a person of notoriety, but I didn’t know it was going to be in this way. I’m pleased as punch, but I had no idea.

Stuttering Craig

JA – How did you get involved with screwattack?

BB – Basically Stuttering Craig emailed me and asked if I want to partner up with us. At the time all I knew about screwattack was Video Game Vaults and the Angry Video Game Nerd, both of which I loved. So of course I was like Hell Yeah! and the rest is history.
