Verizon Wireless has confirmed for the Wall Street Journal that it is
ending its New Every Two upgrade promotion effective January 16. Under
the terms of the deal, Verizon Wireless subscribers became eligible for
discounts (between $30 and $100) towards new phones every two years.
Beginning January 16, Verizon Wireless will not offer the New Every Two
upgrade to new customers, and will not extend it for current customers
after their next upgrade. In addition to dropping New Every Two, Verizon
is also extending the length of time customers must hold onto a cell
phone before they can upgrade at reduced prices. Previously, Verizon
offered new-customer pricing to existing customers at or around the
13-month mark of a two-year contract. Now, customers will have to serve
20 months of their contract before they become eligible for discounted
device upgrades. These policy changes go into effect approximately two
weeks before Apple’s iPhone 4 goes on sale via Verizon.
