A baby boy was shot dead and his parents seriously wounded after leaving a baby shower, police said.
The family from Redwood City, California had been at the baby shower yesterday at a home on Wisteria Drive, East Palo Alto.
They left at around 12.50am and started to drive away.
As they came out of the home two unidentified men wearing dark clothing opened fire on the family’s vehicle.
The three-month-old boy was shot in the head while his mother and father were wounded.
All were rushed to nearby Stanford Hospital where the baby was pronounced dead a couple of hours later.
The parents, both 22, have injuries not thought to be life threatening, police said in a statement.
The baby boy’s three-year-old brother, who was also in the car during the attack, was not hurt.
Police are now hunting the gunmen and have released two E-fits in a bid to aid their investigations.
‘Clearly any killing is tragedy, but especially when it’s a three-month-old it strikes at the heart of all our community,’ Police Chief Ronald Davis said at a news conference yesterday.
He called the gunmen a ‘significant threat to the community’ and appealed for them to ‘have some sense of humanity and surrender.’
Police believe the victims were targeted but have not yet released their names.
