Rep. Gabrielle Giffords appeared in the chamber of the U. S. House of Representatives today and there was plenty of applause from both Republicans and Democrats. Sadly, it was for a sendoff of a strong lady who has been through quite a bit over the past year. She resigned her position, but not before she received a huge round of tributes, cheers and hugs.
On a Saturday morning in 2011, Giffords was severely wounded during a shooting rampage in her home district. She resigned today, but not before making a plea for civility and hinting that she may run again for office in the future. She continues to have problems from the injuries sustained in the shooting, but she is recovering.
Giffords told the crowd that, in her five years in Congress, “Always I fought for what I thought was right. But never did I question the character of those with whom I disagreed. Never did I let pass an opportunity to join hands with someone just because he or she held different ideals.”
Giffords will be missed, but she is most definitely an icon of courage and fight. The Heat wishes her all the best and we can’t wait to see the additional strides she will make in her recovery.
