Using “boy” to describe the president of the United States when that president is black and then trying to claim it wasn’t a slur would be a tough claim for anyone to make. “Boy” has a long history as a term applied to black men to deny them the dignity of adulthood, of full citizenship, of, when you get down to it, full personhood. Nor is this the first time a white Republican has used the word to apply to President Obama.
