An off-duty police officer has been shot in the head after taking another officer hostage and going on a wild car ride through Carbon County.
The off-duty officer from Lansford, Pa., which is about 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia, forced a fellow officer at gunpoint out of the Lansford Police Department and into a police cruiser on Friday night, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
The unidentified captor then drove the cruiser, with the hostage inside, about 10 miles to nearby Jim Thorpe, Pa.
State police say the officer was driving along Broadway in the town when a fight broke out in the cruiser.
The hostage was able to get a hold of a gun and shot the off-duty officer in the head, according to police.
The off-duty officer was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
It is currently unclear what sparked the hostage situation.
