A road collapsed after a large water main broke in a busy city, swallowing cars which fell into a crater up to 20ft deep.
The sinkhole in Milwaukee appeared on Saturday evening, shortly after a 42inch water main broke.
Around 90 minutes after it is thought to have broken, as residents noticed low water pressure, Witi-TV in the city reported that the road apparently began to crack.
Two cars parked nearby were sucked into the resulting hole, which the Journal Sentinel estimated was around 625 square feet.
Andrew Gelles, owner of one of the cars that crashed into the hole, had been preparing to play with his band at a bar around the corner from the site near the Humboldt bridge.
He told Witi-TV: ‘Unloaded my gear and saw a parking spot available just at the bottom of that hill and thought, “Perfect, I’ll just park there.”‘
As he walked away from his car, he noticed water streaming out of a nearby manhole cover.
