DENHAM SPRINGS, La. – A 32-year-old man was charged with negligent homicide after running over a neighbor’s child while pulling into his driveway, according to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office. The driver was distracted by his cell phone and did not see the six-year-old boy.
The incident occurred on Sept. 24 around 6:30 p.m. Welch hit and killed six-year-old Tyler Myers as he was pulling into his home on Rue De Fleur, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Welch was on his cell phone as he was pulling into the driveway of his residence. He felt a bump and upon exiting his vehicle, Welch observed the child lying on the ground at the rear of his vehicle,” said a statement from Sheriff Jason Ard.
Welch was subsequently arrested and charged with negligent homicide. He is in the Livingston Parish Jail with a bond of $25,000.
