THIBODAUX, La. — A man who claimed to be “mechanically inclined” was arrested after police said he bypassed a device in his car to stop anyone from starting it while intoxicated.
Jake Thomas Richard, 24, was arrested on charges of DWI and no license plate light.
He was arrested about 1 a.m. Wednesday when an officer noticed his license plate light was out, police said.
The officer also noticed that Richard had an ignition interlock device, which stops a person from starting the vehicle while impaired. Police said Richard admitted drinking alcohol.
When the officer asked how Richard managed to start his vehicle, he replied that he was “mechanically inclined.”
Richard was arrested after he failed a field a sobriety test. Police said he had a blood-alcohol level of .178.
