Illinois Deputy Fatally Shoots Sonya Massey: Bodycam Video Released

Springfield, IL — The Illinois State Police (ISP) released body-worn camera (BWC) footage this week capturing the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Sonya Massey by a Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy. The incident occurred on July 6 when Massey called 911 for assistance.

The video, posted on Monday, provides a graphic depiction of the encounter between Massey and law enforcement officers who responded to her call for help. The footage shows deputies entering Massey’s home and the subsequent moments that led to the fatal shooting.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John C. Milhiser, in coordination with law enforcement and after consulting with Massey’s family, made the decision to release the video to the public. The release aims to provide transparency concerning the incident, which has sparked significant public interest and concern.

The video reveals deputies entering the residence, where Massey can be seen in a state of distress. The situation quickly escalated, culminating in a deputy shooting Massey in the face. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The ISP and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office have launched an investigation into the incident. Milhiser stated that the investigation would be thorough, ensuring all facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting are scrutinized.

Massey’s family has requested privacy during this time of grief. They have also called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation to understand the events that led to the tragic loss of their loved one.

Public response to the video has been varied, with some advocating for better training and protocols for law enforcement officers responding to calls involving individuals in distress. Others have expressed support for the deputies involved, emphasizing the unpredictable and dangerous nature of law enforcement duties.

The ISP has assured the public that all aspects of the incident, including the deputies’ actions and adherence to protocol, will be reviewed as part of the investigation. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
