An ice cream van man was shot dead just minutes after selling snacks to a group of children.
Carl Banks, 60, was gunned down on Tuesday evening driving his van in Dayton, Ohio, on part of the route he had followed for several years.
Police believe he was the victim of a robbery gone wrong and are now hunting a teenager seen fleeing the scene.
Divorced father-of-two Banks, said to be a popular figure in the neighbourhood, had been navigating his usual route when he was murdered.
Police initially thought he had crashed his van – because he managed to drive it two blocks before it veered off the road and crashed into a house.
But when they arrived on the scene, they found him slumped dead over the steering wheel.
Sgt Dan Mauch said detectives believe Banks was the target of a failed robbery attempt.
