The series of vertebrae extending from the skull to the pelvis; spine. The chief support of a system or organization…the BACKBONE! And all of that is just what one of the original Dungeon Family members is to Generation X: BACKBONE.
Backbone aka “Mr. Fat Face Hundred Dollar Bill”” has been doing this music thing every since he was still wet behind the ears. As a youngster, if it was an instrument, Backbone could probably play it. Coming from a family of musically inclined people, his mother and his father were both in the music industry. His father, a member and originator of the band, Hell on Dry Land, worked with such legions as, Johnny Taylor, Joe Tex, and The Godfather of Soul, James Brown. A very devoted father to his son.
“Dungeon Family Generation X is the grandchild of a vibration and that vibration is the first generation Dungeon Family”, is the way Backbone describes the movement he’s attacked. He’s not trying to change history, he’s just trying to lay the foundation to bring back good music. Music that used to rock our souls to the very being of who We are.
The Dungeon Family is a hip hop/R&B/soul musical collective, based in Atlanta, Georgia and specializing in Southern hip hop with heavy funk and soul influences. The group derives its name from “The Dungeon”, the name given to record producer Rico Wade’s basement studio where many of the early members of the collective did their first recordings. Rico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brown constitute the production/songwriting team Organized Noize, who have produced hits for the main popular Dungeon Family groups: OutKast and Goodie Mob.
Only once has the collective been brought together for a project: the 2001 collaborative album “Even in Darkness”.
THE HEAT: Where you been, what’s been happening?
BACKBONE: Everything in particular…Music is an art form. The process has to be antiquity formatted, you can’t just rush perfection. So you must sit back and elaborate on the common to make it make sense. You know, common sense.
THE HEAT: I can feel that. So let’s talk about the project, “Dungeon Familys Own Backbone presents Generation X.
BACKBONE: That project is an appreciation to and for First Generation Dungeon Family…Backbone, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Cool Breeze, Witch Doctor, Big Boi, Organzied Noise, Organized Noize, Rico Wade, Sleepy Brown, Ray Murray, Andre 3000, Earthtone III, Andre 3000, Mr. DJ, Goodie Mob, Big Gipp, T-Mo, Cee-Lo, Khujo, Parental Advisory, Mello, K.P., Big Reese, The Lumberjacks, T-Mo Khujo, Society of Soul, Sleepy Brown, Roni, Big Rube, Ray, Rico, Joi, Lil’ Will, Duke Roald Zilla, Sifu Terrence Walker. We all know these cats. That album is an appreciation for us. I’m a member of the first generation and a full fledge member of Generation X.
THE HEAT: On this new project, who can we look forward to getting to hear from?
BACKBONE: Generation X…which is composed of Doski Wo, Aleon Craft, Mamas Moonshine, Renegade El Raey, Miss C.C. Laflour, Golden Buttafly, Dukes of Daville, Crooklyn Crooks, Chef T. Randle, KG da Artist, Terence Rushin, Bobby Whitfield, Humble, and Shawn Ranae. A lot of these artist have their own movement as well. However; you will be introduced to these formulas, so stay tuned.
THE HEAT: Is there any particular single Generation X is pushing from “Global Warning”?
BACKBONE: The entire project is an appreciation like I said. So, all the songs are considered singles at the moment.
THE HEAT: Ok, because it’s coming from the entire Generation X?
BACKBONE: Exactly…It’s a contribution by a bunch of talented musical genesis. Generation X is not just about producers and song writers. We also have graphic designers, paintbrush artist, vegan chef, tv correspondents, it’s an entire culture. Generation X is much bigger than this appreciation CD. Look for us in ALL aspects of life.
THE HEAT: Who produced “Global Warning”?
BACKBONE: Bobby Whitfield, Humble, and I had some production from Swiftbox Production to produce the element. But we all creatively worked together to create this emotion.
THE HEAT: What’s your opinion on this new era of rap music?
BACKBONE: That’s just what it is rap…”rappaticious”.
THE HEAT: And as far as the music outside of the groove that Generation X is bringing. The music we were used to coming from the Dungeon Family back in the day. The new era of rap has a different vibe, a different emotion. What’s your take on that?
BACKBONE: You know why Generation X gives you that feeling of good emotion Dungeon Family groove? Because I am Dungeon Family and I didn’t know what else to do but create good music.
THE HEAT: And you’ve done that throughout your musical career. Much appreciation to what you do man, you do it “fantabulously”!
BACKBONE: I do appreciate that. You can find me on several Outkast and Goodie Mob records, as well as, my solo debut project, “Concrete Law”. You can also be looking out for my film project, “Controlled Substance”. Meaning, I now control the substance that I look through portrayed to the people.
THE HEAT: I like that. It sounds just like what the name Backbone stands for; the spine, or a person that’s leading something or an organization; a movement. You are definitely doing just that.
BACKBONE: Definitely…it also supports the system. Regardless of where I am on the totem-pole trust and believe that Backbone is going to support an entire system.
THE HEAT: Are you looking to do work on any new projects?
BACKBONE: First of all, if they’re looking to work with Backbone, understand that I have a twenty-one year resume which can be researched. It is a job, so there will be a fee. I can be contacted at 678-459-5140 and we will discuss the particulars. Know that this is a situation that will not lie dormant. Of course if I get on it, it has to be of substance and it will be promoted as much as I can on my end. But we will not just do a song and forget about it. You also will receive valuable information on this game, as well as the game of life. Spend your money where it’s worth it. And trust me, it will be worth it.
THE HEAT: Well Backbone we sure appreciate you coming to vibe with us. We know you’re busy but we wanted to share some of you with your fans and ours. You deserve it!
BACKBONE: I appreciate you Nik and The Heat Magazine for recognizing this is an authentic movement.
