(HEAT FEATURE) King the Boss, leader of Houston’s GWAP Movement Street Team

King: a male sovereign or monarch; a man who holds by life tenure, and usually by hereditary right, the chief authority over a country and people; a person or thing preeminent in its class.

Texas has birthed a long line of “kings”. From Port Arthur’s UGK (Pimp C and Bun B) to Houston’s Lil Keke, Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Scarface, Lil Flip, Paul Wall, and others, the “king” titled has been duly earned by those who rule Texas’ entertainment scene. Meet King the Boss, a Houston music artist/songwriter who is helping to carry that royal torch.

King the Boss moved to Houston at a young age, bringing with him talent, intelligence, motivation, and a touch of class – all attributes that are helping to carry his career to a whole new level. This young entrepreneur helped to co-found the GWAP Movement (“Grind With A Purpose”) Street Team. Given the recent grind and noise the GWAP Movement has been making, it is evident that King the Boss will help to continue the legendary music hustle put into motion decades ago by some of Houston’s finest.

We caught up with King the Boss recently, on the heels of his performance at the 2019 Hustle Hard Awards, and here’s what he had to say:

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Where did you get the moniker “King the Boss”?

KING THE BOSS: The way I got King the Boss is that all black men are kings. A black man’s heritage comes from Kings. I’ve always seen myself as a boss, a leader. Everything I do is boss-like, while staying humble.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: How long have you been in the music industry?

KING THE BOSS: I’ve been writing music for 15 years, but started professionally 7 years ago. That’s when I really begin to push my music out there.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Growing up, who were your musical influences?

KING THE BOSS: Growing up what inspired me to pursue music was not a specific person, but the the slow jam/ R&B genre.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: What is your GWAP movement about?

KING THE BOSS: It means “Grind With A Purpose”. Everything we do, touch, or come across, we do with a purpose.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: What is your favorite thing about performing?

KING THE BOSS: My favorite thing about performing is having someone that’s close to me, that I care about, be in the audience and have them seeing me do what I love to do. Best feeling in the world.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: If you could work with any producer, who would it be?

KING THE BOSS: My brotha OG Dolla because he knows me the most.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Where do you see your brand in the next 2 to 5 years?

KING THE BOSS: In 2-5 years, I see us making a positive impact by spreading knowledge on this generation and future generations about life. You can achieve anything in your life if you Grind With A Purpose.

THE HEAT MAGAZINE: How important do you believe it is for entertainers to be role models for our youth?

KING THE BOSS: I think it’s extremely important because you never know a person’s journey or what they’re going through and if my music will inspire just one person, then it has come full circle.
