A grandmother has been accused of deliberately burning her two young grandsons’ tongues when they went to visit her.
Shirley Hagerman, 56, is facing battery charges after they claimed she had burned their tongues with a heater, causing painful blisters to appear.
According to court documents, the boys, aged 6 and 3, were visiting their grandmother, in Henry County Indiana on January 15 when the incident was said to occur.
A detective with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department interviewed the 6-year-old, who said his grandmother made them wait in line and stand in front of her with their tongues out.
One of the boys was allegedly told to wait behind the other boy for his time to be burned.
According to the documents, the boy said Hagermanm, who is a truck driver, used a screen from the front of a heater to burn them. But police are still trying to figure out why she did it.
When the boys were returned to their foster parents, they reported their grandmother had burned their tongues.
The young boys were transported to Marion General Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.
Hagerman was arrested on February 17 and preliminary charged with two felony counts of battery.
She bonded out of jail the following day and is due in court for an initial hearing on February 28.
