A high school swimming teacher who allegedly had sexual relations with a minor was arrested yesterday.
Police in Utah arrested 35-year-old instructor Jamie Waite, after a tip off from friends of the 17-year-old student claimed the pair were having a relationship.
Police Lieutenant Scott Conley says the alleged relationship started last autumn or earlier.
The Ogden Standard-Examiner reported Miss Waite was arrested and held at the Weber County Jail on felony rape of a minor and sodomy of a minor charges.
In law, sodomy is defined as ‘deviate sexual intercourse’, which can include oral sex.
Waite was a volunteer swimming coach at the school.
Ogden school spokeswoman Donna Corby says school officials are checking Waite’s hiring history and investigating whether she had other alleged relationships with students.
According to school authorities, volunteers undergo the same fingerprint and background checks as regular teachers.
Lt. Conley said the arrest was made after a week-long investigation that began after the relationship with the male swim team student was reported to police.
Speaking to the paper, he said: ‘We received information from some individuals who know both the suspect and the alleged victim
They felt it was improper, so they notified police.’
He added: ‘It’s an unfortunate act where a minor is involved with an adult who was in a position of authority.’
Police would not name the school involved, although the paper reported that a Facebook page set up for a local High School swim team had pictures of and entries from Waite.
Police are believed to be investigating whether Waite had relationships with any other students at the school.
