A federal agent has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, in connection with a fatal shooting at a McDonald’s in Hawaii.
Twenty-seven year old Christopher Deedy, a Special Agent with the U.S. State Department, was arrested a short distance from the restaurant on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki, after the 3 a.m. Saturday shooting.
Authorities say the victim has been identified as 23-year-old Kollin Elderts, a resident of Windward Oahu. Elderts reportedly suffered a single gunshot wound at the restaurant after he had been at a club earlier in the evening.
The shooting on Saturday in Waikiki comes as security is ramped up in the area ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, which starts on Tuesday. It was unclear whether Deedy was in Hawaii for APEC and it is also unclear whether he knew Elderts.
The special agent, who is attached to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, has had his bail set at $250,000.
