Customs officers find 44 pounds of cocaine-coated corn flakes in Ohio

Federal agents say they seized frosted cereal in Cincinnati because the corn flakes turned out to be soaked in cocaine, officials announced in a statement Friday.Bico, a narcotic detector dog with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, alerted authorities to the cocaine-coated flakes on Feb. 13 in a shipment of cereal that originated from South America, according to a release from the agency. The 44 pounds of cocaine cereal seized has an estimated value of $2.82 million, according to authorities, who said the shipment was headed to a private residence in Hong Kong.Officers found white powder and the flakes were coated in a grayish substance after the dog alerted them to the shipment.Smugglers will hide narcotics in anything imaginable, said Richard Gillespie, Cincinnati port director, in the release.“The men and women at the Port of Cincinnati are committed to stopping the flow of dangerous drugs, and they continue to use their training, intuition, and strategic skills to prevent these kinds of illegitimate shipments from reaching the public,” Gillespie said.Customs and Border Patrol agents regularly screen arriving international passengers and cargo for drugs, weapons, and other restricted products. On a typical day last year, CBP confiscated 3,677 pounds of drugs at ports of entry across the nation.
