US District Judge David Bunning told Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, 48, she will remain behind bars until she complies with his order to issue the licenses. She is refusing to on religious grounds.
A federal judge in Kentucky ordered the defiant Rowan County Clerk to jail on Thursday afternoon after she repeatedly refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
US District Judge David Bunning told Kim Davis, 48, she would stay behind bars until she complied with his order to resume issuing the licenses.
Davis, an Apostolic Christian who has been divorced three times, said ‘thank you’ before being led out of the courtroom by a US marshal.
She later insisted she would not accept a compromise that would allow her out of jail. Attorneys for the plaintiffs had proposed to the court that she be freed if she promised not to interfere with her deputies – but she refused.
