A Candid Conversation With Actor Juan Ortiz

What was the exact moment or specific performance that made you realize, “I need to do this for the rest of my life”?

I knew I was born to do this for the rest of my life when I did my first film called van vorst park back in 2005 with no experience in film or acting and being able to watch myself on screen of my tv lit a light bulb in my head the joy and excitement and love from creating and telling stories made me feel alive I knew that acting was my life.

Can you share a story from your very first audition—what went through your mind, and how did you handle the nerves?

My first audition was horrible lol I remember being nervous and not knowing what to do walking into a room not knowing what to expect or who will be in the other side had my anxiety running hard. I learn from that experience to practice and have self control but not only self control being able to use those nerves feelings and emotions in different moments and situations for the better of the character or scene I’m auditioning for with the time it only builds confidence and you learn from your experiences.

How do you typically approach a script for the first time to find your character’s voice?

I first learn the character who is he what is his motive where is he from what is his conflict what does he feel what is going on in his life than I learn the lines and get familiar with the characters interactions in all the scenes not just understanding the character but the story and scenes with the other characters just putting all together and bringing it to life.

What is your go-to technique for memorizing lines or mastering a difficult accent under a tight schedule?

I like to read the first few lines in the character dialogue repeating it to myself and finding what works and what doesn’t and what feels authentic to me as I continue with the next lines and scenes till I master and memorize every word of dialogue in the script.

The entertainment industry is famous for its highs and lows; how do you build resilience against rejection early in your career?

I learn that rejection is part of life and when you have experience your personally ups and downs and hardships you learn that giving up is not an option it can be raining for weeks and dark and cloudy but eventually the sun will shine again just having that mindset to keep going and enjoying the journey that comes with highs and lows That’s not just in in the entertainment industry but in life in general.

What is the best piece of advice an experienced actor or director has given you on set so far?

Showing up and not taking any opportunities for granted be respectful towards everyone and just love what you do and do what you love.
