Beware of the “Brushing” Scam: Protect Yourself and Your Information

A concerning scam known as “brushing” has been reported in multiple states, involving unsolicited packages containing items like rings, bracelets, necklaces, or Bluetooth speakers. These packages often have the recipient’s address but no identifiable sender or retailer information.

The scam escalates when recipients find a QR code included in the package. Scanning this code allows scammers to access personal and financial data from the victim’s phone, potentially draining bank accounts and compromising sensitive information.

To stay safe:

• Do not scan any QR codes included in unsolicited packages.

• Inform family and friends about this scam.

• If you receive such a package, keep or discard the item, but avoid engaging with any suspicious materials included.

QR code scams are not limited to packages—they can also appear on parking meters, advertisements, or other public places. Always verify the source before scanning a QR code.
