Liquor, beer, wine could soon be delivered to your doorstep

You could get your favorite liquor, wine, or beer shipped to your front door as early as this summer thanks to a new Tennessee law.

You could get your favorite liquor, wine, or beer shipped to your front door as early as this summer thanks to a new Tennessee law.

There are still kinks to be worked out, though, before you begin putting in your orders.

The new law goes into effect in July. It allows third party companies to pick up packaged alcohol from a liquor store or other licensed retailer and deliver it to your home for a fee.

The catch? Fifty percent of a delivery business’ gross sales must come from delivering prepared food.

“I think it’s great,” said Gail Bearden, who lives in Memphis.

A company called Delivery Dudes is already making alcohol deliveries in Florida. Owners hope they will be able to bring a similar business model to Memphis.

“People just want the convenience and the quality of restaurant food delivered to them,” said Delivery Dudes owner Guy Stanke.

The law forbids deliveries exceeding one gallon of alcohol, but some are still concerned with the ease of it all.

“Say you’re drunk… you’ve already had some, you order some more. That delivery driver doesn’t know what they’re walking in to,” said Pier Jackson.

Stanke says his company refuses to serve someone who already appears to be too drunk. Customers must also show I.D. proving they are 21 or older.

Some people hope the service will cut down on drunk driving, while others are concerned about liability insurance and say the service makes it too easy for people with drinking problems to get alcohol.
