Joyce Mitchell, 51, was wearing a bullet-proof vest as she stood beside her lawyer, Stephen Johnstone, in Plattsburgh City Court in upstate New York on Monday morning, with her head lowered.
A female prison worker accused of helping two killers escape from prison appeared in court on Monday morning as it emerged that she was investigated last year for a sexual relationship with one of the inmates.
Joyce Mitchell, 51, wore a bullet-proof vest as she stood beside her lawyer, Stephen Johnston, for her second appearance at Plattsburgh City Court in upstate New York.
She was charged on Friday with the felony of promoting prison contraband in the first-degree and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor.
The married training supervisor allegedly supplied hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver to Richard Matt, 48 and 35-year-old David Sweat.
Mitchell, who also reportedly agreed to be the getaway driver for the two inmates but got cold feet at the last minute, hung her head as she stood in court.
She looked bedraggled in her prison-issue stripes and had her hands cuffed at the waist and chains around her ankles.
