US military bumps up threat level at bases in North America

The U.S. military has increased the threat level at bases across North America.

It means citizens will see more random bag and vehicle checks in the coming weeks and ‘heightened vigilance’ at airports.

Though officials insist there is no specific threat to the nation, Army Col Steve Warren conceded the recent shoot-out at an anti-Muslim cartoon contest in Texas contributed to the decision.

Elton Simpson and his roommate Nadir Soofi, both from Phoenix, opened fire outside the Texas event center on Sunday as attendees drew the prophet Muhammad – an activity condemned by the Koran.
