Tekashi 6ix9ine and his distributor Create Music Group made history this morning by being the first fully independent distributor in modern music industry history to achieve Number One on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Chart. The milestone was reached with 6ix9ine’s explosive new single “TROLLZ,” with
Nicki Minaj. “TROLLZ” also boasts the highest weekly sales sum in more than a year, with 108,000 sold, beating Taylor Swift’s “Me!” There have only been 40 songs in Billboard history to achieve a Number One on the Hot 100 Singles Chart.
It’s been a wild ride since the mercurial artist’s first release in nearly 2 years, “GOOBA,” set the record at YouTube to become the biggest hip-hop debut of all time, unseating Eminem’s “Killshot” to take that title and achieving a Number 3 position on the Billboard singles chart as well. 6ix9ine also shattered a record at Instagram Live, drawing more than 2 Million simultaneous viewers, crushing the previous record by almost 400%.
“Tekashi 6ix9ine is without a doubt one of the most galvanizing figures making music today,” said Create Music Group Founder and CEO, Jonathan Strauss. “We are thrilled that we’ve been able to attain what many in our industry thought was impossible — being the first independent distributor to achieve a Number One single on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart since streaming surpassed sales as the dominant form of music consumption. We built our company for the modern artist and this is a watershed moment for fully independent labels, distributors and music creators everywhere.”
“This is a huge historical moment for independent artists and labels around the world,” said Create Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Alexandre Williams. “Tekashi 6ix9ine has shown that it’s possible to remain independent and achieve one of the world’s most significant milestones. We predict there will be many independent artists to follow in his footsteps.”
Create Music Group is privately owned and operated.
