Anime producer and distributor Right Stuf, Inc. is excited to announce the acquisition of the original SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA television series from TMS ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD.
Space Adventure Cobra: The Original TV Series will be released via Right Stuf’s Nozomi Entertainment as two DVD sets, starting in late 2013, along with digital distribution. The upcoming home video release will mark the first time the anime TV series will be available to North American audiences.
Additionally, Nozomi Entertainment wants fans’ questions for an upcoming Q&A interview with Buichi Terasawa, the creator of Cobra. Please submit questions, via the form located at the official series site (cobra.rightstuf.com), by 4 p.m. CT on Fri., Feb. 15, 2013.
Right Stuf’s President and CEO Shawne Kleckner said, “Cobra is a frequently requested title for a reason. Its mix of science fiction, action and adventure is what attracted so many of us to anime in the first place, and it is truly a privilege to bring the television series to North America.”
Deputy Manager of TMS Entertainment USA, Inc. Katsuki Masai said, “The Cobra television series has been immensely popular for years, but this is the very first time it will be released as DVDs and digitally in the United States and Canada. It is our wish that North America’s anime fans enjoy this series as much as sci-fi fans in Japan have.”
One of Japan’s most influential sci-fi/action series, Cobra tells the story of a far-off future where one man – (literally) armed with a psycho-gun – and his android companion are all that stand between the human race and a ruthless criminal organization of space pirates.
Space Adventure Cobra is based upon the best-selling manga (comic) by Buichi Terasawa (Goku: Midnight Eye), which was originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump anthology and later collected into 18 volumes. In addition to the 1980s television adaptation, it inspired a feature film, two direct-to-video anime series (2008-2009) and a 2010 anime TV series, as well as three manga sequel series (also written by Terasawa).
This 31-episode television adaptation of Cobra originally aired on Japanese television, from October 1982 through May 1983. It features animation by TMS ENTERTAINMENT CO., LTD., as well as direction by Osamu Dezaki (The Rose of Versailles, Golgo 13: The Professional).
