The ex-husband of prison worker Joyce ‘Tillie’ Mitchell, Tobey Premo, tells Daily Mail Online that he wife was a serial cheater
As the hunt for Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, entered its fifth day, Daily Mail Online has exclusively learned more of Joyce Mitchell’s life. Police have not said whether or not Mitchell is in custody for any role she may have had in their escape.
Mitchell – known to everyone as ‘Tillie’ – is suspected of helping two highly dangerous killers escape from New York State’s biggest maximum security prison after she was charmed by one of them – sources say Richard Matt – into thinking they had a future if only she would help him get out.
‘She was always a troublemaker,’ said former work colleague Nancy Hewitt. ‘She was quiet, up to a point, but she would always be the one who would be trying to get other people into trouble.
‘I know for a fact that a friend of mine who works at the prison told the authorities there not to hire her because she’d cause trouble — but they did, and now look what’s happened.’
Like dozens of others in the vast north country area of the Adirondacks, Mitchell worked at the Tru-Stitch slipper factory in Bombay, New York. She was among the 161 people who lost their jobs when the factory closed down in 1997.
Tillie. 51, was married at the time to a man named Tobey Premo who has confirmed to Dail Mail Online that his ex-wife was a serial cheater. While working at Tru-Stitch she met mechanic Lyle Mitchell — and soon both of their lives were turned upside down.
