O.J. Simpson was granted parole on charges related to two kidnapping and two robbery convictions, as well as one conviction of burglary with a firearm. However, 66-year-old Simpson will continue to be held for a minimum of four years on convictions for which he is not yet eligible for parole.
Simpson appeared before two members of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners last week. He told them that he’s been a model prisoner and other inmates often seek him out for advice and guidance.
“They were trying to steal other people’s property,” Simpson told the commissioners. “They were trying to steal other people’s money. My crime was trying to retrieve for my family my own property.”
The board said it granted the former NFL player parole because he’s been a model prisoner and has a minimal criminal conviction record.
Simpson will remain behind bars due to four weapons-related charges and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
“We expected it,” Patricia Palm, one of Simpson’s current lawyers, said of the decision. “There is no reason not to grant him parole. I’m glad they did what they should have done.”
