A cigarette-smoking Oregon man’s attempt to steal gasoline came to a fiery end when he accidentally lit himself on fire.
Portland police say that Harry Fredrick Sunivelle, 63, went up in flames just after 11 a.m. while he was pouring stolen gas into his truck.
Sunivelle reportedly stole a partially filled gas can from a truck parked next to his own and began pouring it into his vehicle, all while puffing on a cigarette.
Predictably, the gas ignited, burning his socks and pants and singeing his hair and eyebrows, police said.
The wannabe thief’s vehicle had to be towed away due to fire damage. Police said the truck he stole the gas from also suffered fire damage.
Sunivelle was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, reckless burning and third-degree theft.
