Police said Leah O’Brien, 33, of DeKalb County was killed in the crash on Scott Boulevard. Her 8-year-old daughter was in the car with her and is in critical condition.
Scott Boulevard was closed for more than four hours as police investigated the wreck.
“People routinely drive too fast,” resident Jack Kittle said.
Kittle said the blue lights, debris, and destruction paint an all too familiar scene.
“I’ve seen power poles knocked down that took out power for hours and plenty of accidents over the years on Scott,” Kittle said.
Kittle said he cannot recall there having been a fatality in his 30 years on the block.
Police said 33-year-old Leah O’Brien of DeKalb County was killed when a Hyundai Sonata pulled onto Scott Boulevard from Ridley Circle and was T-boned by a Dodge Charger.
O’Brien’s 8-year-old daughter was riding with her during this accident. The young girl is in critical condition.
DeKalb County Schools confirmed O’Brien was a teacher at Lakeside High School. According to the school’s website, she has been a teacher at the school since 2013.
Decatur police were not ready to disclose if speed was a factor but did say officers often patrol that area of the road.
“We conduct speed enforcement on Scott Boulevard on a regular basis because this is actually the road in the city of Decatur that has the highest speed limit to begin with,” police said.
