Grammy-winning recording engineer killed by police after allegedly holding family at gunpoint

The Metro Nashville Police Department said Mark Capps woke his wife and stepdaughter at 3 a.m. on Thursday and held them at gunpoint in the living room, WZTV reported. Police said Capps threatened to kill both women if they tried to call for help.

He threatened them, said if they called anyone, he’d kill them,” Police department spokesman Don Aaron said at a news briefing Thursday,

Aaron told WSMV that Capps fell asleep at some point after sunrise, at which point the women ran away and went to the police station.

Police enlisted a SWAT team to serve an arrest warrant on Capps on Thursday afternoon.

“Members of SWAT conducted a covert operation outside the residence in the event he barricaded himself inside,” Aaron said, according to Ihe Tennessean. “As SWAT was on the front porch, he came to the door and opened the door with a gun in his hand. At that point, he was shot.

Aaron said that while he did not believe that Capps fired at officers, SWAT officers felt he was an imminent threat because he had a gun in hand, WZTV reported.

Capps was the son of Grand Ole Opry guitarist and Musicians Hall of Fame member Jimmy Capps. Capps’ brother died two days before Thursday’s incident, Variety. reported.

Capps won Grammys four years in a row for best polka album, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He worked with artists like Alabama, the Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow, according to the outlet.
