Google today officially announced Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which
includes a number of new features and changes. First, Google says that
it has refined the user experience of Android 2.3, including changes to
the background colors, menus, settings, and other tools. Android 2.3
includes a completely redesigned software keyboard, which has new
buttons, a clearer view of the current character, and better
editing/dictionary integration. The keyboard now also supports
multi-touch actions, which will allow users to access secondary
characters faster, and it also has an improved cut-and-paste function.
Android 2.3 introduces more power management tools that customers can
make use of to fine-tune battery life, as well as a new application
manager and task killer. Android 2.3 adds built-in support for several
new communication tools, including SIP/VoIP calling and near-field
communications. Android 2.3 adds a new download manager for easier
access to content (apps, files, etc.) that have been downloaded from the
device’s browser. Google also today made available to developers the
new software developer kit for Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
