BOGALUSA, La. — The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office says the bullet that killed a 14-year-old Covington boy apparently was fired when he slung a cocked and loaded .22-caliber rifle over his shoulder and it went off, hitting him in the skull.
Chief Criminal Deputy Scott Blair tells The Daily News that evidence fits witness accounts of the incident in which Brett Wittner died early Feb. 24 at a house in Washington Parish.
Blair says the wound was a contact wound, with the bullet traveling upward. He says the other boy who was in the room tested negative for gunpowder residue.Blair said Wittner was not tested for residue because doctors were trying to save him.
He says the report has been turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
