Not that it is ever a good day to be a dumb criminal, but it certainly was not a good day to be Johnnie Butts – at least not on Sunday, the day the mental giant approached William Pace at a grocery store and tried to sell him some fake gold jewelry.
The problem was that Pace is the police chief in Randolph, Massachusetts – and he also owns a jewelry store.
Butts reportedly had marked the chain “14 Karat Gold†and had priced it at $100.
Pace was out of uniform, but humored Butts long enough to determine by the feel and look of the jewelry, that it was counterfeit. Butts will be issued a summons to appear in court on a charge of attempt to commit larceny by false pretense.
Police are attempting to determine if Butts sold any other fake jewelry before approaching Chief Pace.
What a “golden opportunity” gone wrong – no pun intended, of course.
