A construction worker was busted by a jury for trying to cheat his co-workers out of their share of the winnings from a lottery ticket he purchased. Americo Lopes, a construction worker, allegedly tried to bilk his friends out of their share of the $38.5 million prize on a lottery ticket he bought in 2009.
“They robbed me,” Lopes, 52, said in the courtroom, but his former friends and co-workers disagree. In court, there was testimony claiming that Lopes regularly joined his friends in the office lottery pool. But he says that on the day he bought 12 tickets, he’d made the purchases for himself.
The plantiffs won the $20M suit against Lopes and he has to share the dough with comrades. Even employees who were not involved in the office pool said that Lopes was lying.
