BATON ROUGE- The city police chief has confirmed to the Investigative Unit, the officer at the center of a scandal involving some racially charged text messages has resigned.

WBRZ and the station’s Investigative Unit broke the story Wednesday in an exclusive report by Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto.

Wednesday, there were two investigations into the messages.

Part of the string of texts read, “They are nothing but a bunch of monkeys. The only reason they have this job is the n*****, n***** in them.”

The texts also read, “I wish someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out. I hate looking at those African monkeys at work…I enjoy arresting those thugs with their saggy pants.”

The NAACP called for the department to fire the officer involved.

Chief Carl Dabadie said officer Michael Elsbury handed in his resignation letter early Thursday morning. The officer was placed on administrative leave shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Chief Dabadie told News 2 the behavior will not be tolerated on the force, and said he was “sick to his stomach” after he read what the officer allegedly wrote.

Officer Elsbury was a 15-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department and served in the 4th District. He had no prior disciplinary history, according to BRPD.

The messages were sent to someone who is not on the force.
