As of late, there’s been an influx of female rappers. You may have even noticed that many of them have started to look and sound alike. Well, we recently caught up with a breath of fresh air, New Orleans, Louisiana native Queen Kayy and let us tell you, she is here to raise the bar and break the mold!
While Queen Kayy is an amazing rapper/songwriter, she is also so much more. Beautiful, brainy, resourceful, and talented, she is ready to take the entertainment industry by the reins. In addition to her work as a musician, Queen Kayy has entrepreneurship coursing through her veins. She is also a well-respected and sought after cosmetologist/MUA. She’s also the owner of Kayy’s Kakery (wink, wink if you’ve watched the “Ooey Gooey” visuals and if you haven’t, do so expeditiously!).
Queen Kayy’s latest musical offering, a single entitled “Ooey Gooey”, is available on all major platforms. It’s a catchy single with very creative visuals and dope vibes, to say the least. Once we noticed the reaction Queen Kayy is getting from her fans, The Heat Magazine had to catch up with her to learn more. Check out our interview with Queen Kayy:
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Welcome, Queen Kayy! We are excited to interview you. Let’s jump right into it. Growing up, who influenced you personally? How about professionally?
QUEEN KAYY: Personally, I can say my family. My mother had 5 kids – 3 girls and 2 boys. I am the second to last child (4th), and I’m the youngest daughter. I come from section 8 housing, so I didn’t always get everything I wanted or desired growing up. Just watching how my mother struggled to take care of 5 kids influenced me to want and do better. It influenced me to be into my books, and want to be something in life.
Professionally, my Math teachers and my daughter. I had a teacher named Ms. Janik in the 9th grade and Coach Jack in the 11th. They saw how in love I was with that subject, so they always made sure I stayed on top. They put in the extra work and made sure I never made anything less than a B in their class and I’m so thankful for them because they played a major role in my life. I got pregnant my senior year, and that’s when my hustle started. I had my daughter April 7, 2014 and I graduated high school May 18, 2014 . I started my first job the very next day, May 19th, and I’ve been on go since.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Who were your musical influences?
QUEEN KAYY: Nicki Minaj, her style is authentic. She’s one of a kind and very versatile. Chris Brown is someone I always looked up to, musical wise. He’s the male version of how I see myself. He’s an amazing artist that I can’t wait to meet.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: To what do you attribute your personality and the effect it has on your fans?
QUEEN KAYY: My creativity definitely has an effect on my fans. That makes them want more. I love to stand out, so I make sure I’m always doing something different.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Do you think your city has an effect on your art and unique talent?
QUEEN KAYY: Yes, most definitely. I’m from New Orleans, born and raised, so everything I know was learned here.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Who are your favorite artists and which most heavily influenced you?
QUEEN KAYY: Nicki Minaj, of course. I can honestly say she’s someone I looked up to. I remember in high school she was just starting to blow up and as soon as I saw her I fell in love. People called me Nicki Jr. for the longest, cause I went and got a bang in my hair and put the pink in the back just like her. She definitely inspired me to try music, because that year I made my first song.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: What artists would you like to work with?
QUEEN KAYY: Nicki is always going to be my top pick. Lil Baby, Cardi B, Mulatto (Latto), Ken the Man, etc. The list can go on, but those people are at the top of my list.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Production is so important to an artist’s success. What producers have you worked with?
QUEEN KAYY: J Fever, Mykel on the Beat and Titan.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: So what producers would you like to work with?
QUEEN KAYY: London On Da Track, Metro Boomin, Quality Control, and Dj Khaled.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: So what all have you put out thus far, in terms of music?
QUEEN KAYY: I’ve dropped “All This Ass” featuring Dmae was my previous single. “Ooey Gooey” is my first big project. I released it on June 25, 2021. It’s my very first single and was released along with my first video to the song.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE:Describe your style of music and performance art.
QUEEN KAYY: My style of music is Hip-Hop/ R&B.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Have you explored any other avenues of entertainment (such as acting, producing, etc.)?
QUEEN KAYY: I acted a little for a video that I was in back in June of last year. I also just landed the lead role in a series called “Heavy”.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: Where do you see your career in 2, 5 and 10 years?
QUEEN KAYY: In 2, I can see my music career taking off by then. All the work my team and I are putting in now is yielding great results. I can only imagine how far we’ll be in 2 years. In 5, I plan to have my own salon in 5 years and also a store front for my shoe business. Musically, I can see myself making records with some of the best people to ever do it, going on tour and living my best life. In 10 years, I’ve promised myself I’d be retiring soon at this age. I’m currently 25 and I said I wanted to be one of the youngest people to ever retire. It’s a personal goal I set for myself, that I know I can reach if I continue to put the work in.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: What are your hobbies?
QUEEN KAYY: One of my main hobbies is the gym. I love to work out. I also love dancing and playing volleyball.
THE HEAT MAGAZINE: How do you want to be remembered?
QUEEN KAYY: With all the negativity in the world we live in, I want to be remembered as a positive light of hope. I want to be remembered as a kind, loving person, a great mother and a talented icon.
