A 3-year-old boy was killed Tuesday after a woman tossed him from theseventh-floor balcony of her Queens apartment as the child’s motherwatched in horror, cops and prosecutors said.
In a fit of rage, Xiao Cai, 53, threw Jerry Zhou from the terrace of herLeavitt St. home near 35th Ave. in Flushing about 8:30 p.m., lawenforcement sources said.
Cai was arguing with her daughter inside the apartment – which theyshare with the parents of the young boy – when the fight took a tragicturn, prosecutors said.
“She grabbed the child and then threw the child off the balcony up on the seventh floor,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. “The child landed on the cement.”
The crazed Cai – who has a long history of depression and is onmedication – attempted to jump to her death from the same balconyimmediately after but was held back before she could take the plunge,sources said.
“She’s a crazy person,” said a shaken relative. “We don’t know why she did this.”
“He’s dead,” the relative said of the little boy. “All we can do is pray.”
A neighbor said after he heard the terrifying screams next-door, he wentout his front door just as the frantic mother – whom sources identifiedas Xuyun Zhou – sprinted down the stairs.
Once outside, the distraught Zhou picked up her son’s body from the sidewalk and wailed his name, the neighbor said.
The toddler, who would have turned 4 next week, was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Queens.
Cai was in custody at the 109th Precinct stationhouse and was facing murder charges. (NyDailyNews)
