A Florida judge found probable cause to hold George Zimmerman in the murder of Trayvon Martin during the neighborhood watch volunteer’s first appearance in court since he turned himself in to authorities Wednesday night.
In the brief, procedural hearing at the Seminole County jail in Sanford Thursday afternoon, Zimmerman, wearing a blue jumpsuit with his hands cuffed in front of him, stood next to his new lawyer, Mark O’Mara, and spoke only once, telling the judge ‘Yes, sir.’
The initial court appearance, the first time he has publicly shown his face since the February 26 shooting, revealed that prosecutors believe he confronted the unarmed teen first. The documents, filed by State Attorney Angela Corey, contradict his own version of events, in which he claims he was attacked and sucker-punched by 17-year-old Trayvon.
