As of late, Los Angeles County high schools have been hit by thieves, stealing what one might think is the oddest of items – tubas. That’s right – tubas.
The L. A. Times is reporting that burglars recently hit South Gate High School and took an upright concert tuba and a silver sousaphone, worth a combined $13,000. That heist brings the total of stolen tubas to five at that school alone.
Thieves also hit the band departments at Centennial HIgh School, Huntington Park High School and Fremont High School.
Authorities have no clue what’s behind the tuba heists, but the L. A. TImes is reporting that the targeted schools are in an area with a large Mexican immigrant population and where banda is popular. Banda is dance music played by brass and woodwind instruments, accompanied by a tuba. Banda musicians are said to earn more than $100 per hour.
