Phreedom Records is headed to the top by way of its CEO Co’Baby

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

Resiliency is often the cornerstone of the essence of many men who are born in New Orleans, Louisiana or raised in Detroit, Michigan. It can be a struggle, but also a beautiful thing when one rises above the hardships that can be encountered in both cities. Both cities have economic systems that are often set up for the underdog to fail. Often times it takes a lot more work to taste success.

Meet Corey “Co’Baby” Coleman (or “Co” as he is also affectionately known), CEO and founder of Phreedom Records. Co has quite an interesting history in New Orleans’ entertainment arena – but for as interesting as it is, there are few who have the same pedigree and even fewer who have put in the work and time. And Co is resilient, to say the least. He is the epitome of perseverance and because of that, he will go down in Louisiana music history as one of the architects of its success.

Co’Baby with the phenomenal comedian Sheryl Underwood

This humble soul works tirelessly to make sure his young artists get on. When you meet Co, you’ll notice the humility right away, in that he often fades into the background, until such time he needs to make his presence known – and that he does quite well. It has been said that a team is only as strong as its leader and that for such a leader to be effective, that he must be willing to handle the duties of those he leads, as well as his own. Co definitely does that – from being a master networker, to providing the financial backing to so many, to making his family’s dream of owning and running a premiere label come true, Co is the catalyst to so many fires. His hard work and never give up attitude keep him at the right place at just the right time. The most beautiful thing though, is that Phreedom Records is a family owned business. Co, along with his wife Amy, are working diligently to ensure that Phreedom not only becomes a household name, but an entertainment dynasty.

Co’Baby & Phreedom artist Lucki Lew

Co got his start in the music business when the entity now known as Cash Money was in upstart mode. To say he learned the business from the inside out at a time urban music was really taking a foothold in the South, is a staunch understatement. One of his main goals is for his label’s artists to drop timely, quality music. Co has been responsible for several hits lately, including Lucki Lew’s “My Lil Yeah”, a single featuring standout Tweeday, and “Hotspot”, a fiery (pun intended) club joint featuring Level.

Co’Baby with New Orleans superstar Young Greatness

We recently caught up with Co to talk about his history, dreams and aspirations. We had quite the interesting conversation with him – here’s how it went:

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

CO: I’m a God fearing man who loves life, phamily, and I work for what I want out of life.

SINCE YOU’RE FROM THE CUISINE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

CO: Well cooked T-Bone steak, no redness showing, and a loaded baked potato

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

CO: Born in New Orleans in 1969. Raised in Detroit.

WHAT DRIVES YOU?

CO: My phamily and my will to help others win is what drives me.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? WHAT ARTISTS HAVE YOU WORKED WITH AND WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU WORK WITH?

CO: I started when I was in high school at Henry Ford High School in Detroit, Michigan. I was a back-up singer in a group called the Gigolos. Then I moved back to New Orleans and met Ronald and Brian Williams. We were street guys. After a couple of years we decided to start Ca$h Money. I stayed working for the company for a few years doing the office work, went on the road with them and did Road Manager duties for the artists Lil Slim, PMW, Mr. Ivan, Ms. Tee, Pimp Daddy, and UNLV. Part of being the Road Manager meant driving all of the artists to and from shows. Now I currently work with fire producers Jay Da Menace of HITZ, KC Da Producer, and Nave Monjo for my own label, Phreedom Records. My artists have collaborated with Jay Jones of Young Money, Jay Da Menace, Kango Slim of PNC, Tweeday, Level, Trae of Hyperphyll, and have opened shows for well-known artists like Jacquees, Kevin Gates, Colonel Loud, Z-RO, and Scarface, just to name a few.

YOU HAVE QUITE A RESUME. TAKE US THROUGH A DAY IN THE LIFE AT PHREEDOM RECORDS.

CO: A day at Phreedom…well it’s always what’s next. Who can I work with to get my team noticed, schedule studio sessions, plan promotional trips, travel arrangements, hotel accommodations – constantly on social media creating a public presence, researching and determining the scams from the legit contacts and projects – just constantly pushing.

WHERE CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE PHREEDOM RECORDS IN THE NEXT 2, 5 AND EVEN 10 YEARS?

CO: In the next 2 to 10 years I pray to God Phreedom Records will be a household name that phamilies can relate to, young and old. I want Phreedom to do everything – Gospel, Country, R&B, Hip Hop, Techno, EDM, and Funk. We’ll continue to do charity work and be visible in the community, providing sponsorships and opening outreach centers that helps kids get focused on positive moves in life. And also, continuing to love God and follow his path while growing revenue for all. Our motto is One God, One Love.

EDITOR’S NOTE: It is a great thing to see someone as genuine and positive as the Colemans grow their label (Phreedom Records) and continue to help others. We have known them for a while now and they are always supportive, positive and trying to help the community in any way possible. We are excited at their upcoming projects and we are always happy to see their artists prosper as well.

(NEW HEAT) Pee Wee Da Kidd – “Like A Villain” (VIDEO)

Like A Villain (Explicit) by Pee Wee Da Kidd on VEVO.

Young, vibrant and charismatic, Louisiana artist Pee Wee Da Kidd is an up and coming artist/songwriter who definitely bears watching. His latest offering, the visuals to his song “Like A Villain”, chronicles everyday life and struggle Down South.

Hailing from a small Southwestern Louisiana town nestled between Lake Charles and Lafayette, Pee Wee Da Kidd is proof positive that being from a tiny area does not mean you can’t make it. In fact, it only makes him grind harder so he can be the shining star he is destined to become.

“Like A Villain” gives an up close and personal look at Pee Wee Da Kidd’s street side, but make no mistake about it – Pee Wee has definite crossover appeal. He is also the epitome of hard work paying off. He recently inked a distribution deal through Empire by way of entertainment powerhouse Starvin Lion Entertainment. Pee Wee is most definitely working up the ranks of independent artists.

Sunday, June 7th, 2015

MUSHIYA 1

On Wednesday June 3rd 2015, I was sitting talking to a really good friend of mines and in our conversation I told her that I would love to meet “MRS. MUSHIYA” from the show “Cutting It In The ATL.” She told me to go on Instagram and send her a message, I said why not It’s worth a try. Within the hour after I sent the message, I got a call saying that I could go with “The Heat Magazine” and do a write-up on Mrs. Mushiya the very next day. Oh you see how fast GOD works, that’s what i told my friend.  So I spoke it into the universe and it came to pass. I met Mrs. Mushiya that Thursday night and when i tell you that she is a FORCE TO BE RECKON WITH, honey that’s and understatement!! She’s so humbled and beautiful all in the same breath tho. When she found out about my battle with cancer, she was so amazed. She told me that I was beautiful, gave me a HUGE hug and kissed me on my cheek. I was so humbled, grateful and most of all shocked because she showed me that much love and didn’t know me from a can of paint. She told one of her colleagues about me, which her dad does nothing but research on cancer and took my info so that she could give to her dad for him to call me. I was so amazed myself, but I had to reflect back to why I was really there. That’s where GOD needed me to be at that very moment to do and get what he needed me too. When I say that I had a blast with Mrs. Mushiya and her crew from “THE DAMN SALON”  6780 Roswell Rd Ne. Atlanta, Ga, please believe me, I even won me a great gift! The Damn Salon specializes in ALL natural hair. She said “Who the hell says that natural hair has to be boring!!?” She believes that “BEAUTY” comes in many colors and shades no matter if they have kinky or straight hair. She also loves herself and want to teach more people to do the same. “Who cares what people think of you?” is what she always says. Can you imagine her face when she says that!? Yeah, I know right lol. You can find THE DAMN SALON in a more than just a few places like Atlanta, GA, Washington, DC, Charlotte, NC, New York, Houston, TX, and Montreal. You can also order the hair extensions from her brand called RUNWAY CURLS on her website www.thedamnsalon.com and any other info that you may want to know about this Phenomenal Woman. I’m so glad and honored that I had the pleasure meeting her!! My thoughts of the day!

“PRINCESS BEAUTY BAR & BOUTIQUE”

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015

princess b 0

If anyone could tell you one thing about “Ms. TK” is that I LOVE fashion & style. So I stopped in on not only a GREAT friend of mines but where I shop at as well “Princess Beauty Bar & Boutique”, with the one and only Ms. Crystal Flecther. While I was there I felt what better time for me to pick her brain and ask her a few questions about her business. As we always do when I make my visit we have to drink water & chat to see what’s been going on in each other’s lives since our last visit. Today I surprised her when I asked If I could interview her, man if y’all could see the look on her face, I had to laugh myself. She was willing after I finished laughing. I really wanted to know, what made her open a boutique in the first place. “It’s a passion TK, I always loved to shop so I decided to turn my shopping into a business that also helps the women of the community” is what she says to me, so I say “Oh” because she was telling me something that I didn’t know about her. She goes on to say that she love to help every customer look and feel fabulous as well as to help build up their self-esteem but on a low-cost budget. She opened the doors in 2013, with no overhead all by herself. “It makes me feel like a robot sometimes, but I thank GOD that I’m blessed to be able to do it!” she said. In the next 5 yrs, her vision is to be a fashion expert on a tv show, styling celebrities, having her own Brand & some employees so she’ll have time to do what she needs too. Every year for Mother’s Day she does makeovers for mothers which consists of styling them and getting their hair done, with her being a single mother herself is what inspired her to “GIVE BACK” to the community in that form. She also has brought celebrities such as Shekinah(from the T.I. & Tiny show) , and Perez(He’s a celebrity stylist from ATL) to the city and have what we call a “Sip & Shop” event, that’s where women can come mingle, sip & shop all in one place. It’s not easy having a business especially in a city like Columbus, Ga where there is so much of the same things going on all over the city. When your heart is in the right place it does not matter how many of the same things going on opens, as long as GOD is in it, you’ll always win it!!! That’s what she told me in closing, Now those are some GREAT words to live by. If you’re in the city, stop by and give her a visit at 2400 Hamilton Rd, Columbus Ga or you can check her out on her website www.princessboutiqueorg.bigcartel.com She she “ALL” styles of fashion from business, church, allnight-fun, & causul attire, I promise you’ll be hooked because I’M GUILTY MYSELF!! My thoughts of the day!!

NFL Team Cuts Player After Arrest For Killing Yorkie

Sunday, May 31st, 2015

An Atlanta Falcons player has been let go from the team after he allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend’s pint-sized Yorkie, Dior.

A former Atlanta Falcons player kicked his ex-girlfriend’s small dog because it bit him, his attorney said Friday night. Prince Shembo was in tears over his arrest and release from the team, attorney Jerry Froelich said.

“He didn’t mean to kill the dog,” Froelich told reporters outside the Gwinnett County jail.

But the Yorkie’s injuries were extensive, according to police. Friday afternoon, Shembo, 23, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, Cpl. Michele Pihera said. Within two hours, Shembo was released from the team, and Friday night, he surrendered to authorities. He was released shortly after 10 p.m. after posting $15,000 bond, jail records showed.
