Eighteen dead and more flooding to come as rains continue over Texas

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Several more inches of rain were expected through the weekend in already soaked Texas and Oklahoma.

The death toll continues to rise in flood-ravaged Texas and Oklahoma and as receding floodwaters revealed mounting destruction, rains continue to threaten even more flooding on Wednesday.

In hard-hit Houston, some of that destruction came Tuesday in the form of a waste water treatment plant so inundated with waters from an overflowing nearby bayou that more than 100,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled out into surrounding floodwaters.

Flash flood warnings were expected through the weekend in Texas, as a storm system that has settled along several southern states brings several more inches of rain.

Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate flood-threatened areas of Texas on Wednesday as storms bringing torrential rains battered the state, where at least 15 people have been killed in weather-related incidents this week, including six in Houston.

People were told to stay away from more than 200 homes in Parker County where the Brazos River was poised to spill its banks about 30 miles west of Fort Worth on Wednesday night, county officials said.

Dallas Mayor Declares Emergency As West Nile Virus Spreads

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings declared Wednesday that the city is facing an emergency as the West Nile virus spreads, killing at least 14 people in Texas and 26 nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Dallas declaration clears the way for aerial spraying to kill the infected mosquitos that carry the disease.

The United States is experiencing its biggest spike in West Nile virus since 2004, with 241 cases of the disease reported nationwide this year so far, including four deaths, health officials said last weekend, before the latest totals.

Of the 42 states that have reported infections in people, birds or mosquitoes, 80% of them have been in Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. The CDC listed a breakdown of infections by state.

“It is not clear why we are seeing more activity than in recent years,” said Marc Fischer, a CDC medical epidemiologist. “Regardless of the reasons for the increase, people should be aware of the West Nile virus activity in their area and take action to protect themselves and their family.”

The virus is transmitted through infected mosquitoes.

Woman Who Married Older Man For Money Had Him Killed When She Discovered He Was Broke

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Husband and wife: Raelynne Simonin, 23, married Jack Vincent Purselley, 39, for his money, only to find out he was a con man. She has been charged with accessory after the fact in his shooting death

A widow charged in her husband’s murder has admitted she married the man 16 years her senior for his money, only to find out he was a con artist, police have revealed.

Raelynne Simonin, 23, is charged with accessory after the fact in the shooting death of 6ft 9ins Jack Vincent Purselley, 39, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Simonin is in jail in Pinal County, Arizona, after she drove there following the murder to tell police she had been kidnapped and raped by the men who killed her husband.

But after being questioned by deputies for more than an hour, she recanted that story and admitted she had made the 18-hour journey to speak to Purselley’s father about his son’s $1million life insurance policy.

She said she married Purselley, with whom she moved to Oklahoma from Arizona five weeks ago, because he told her she was the beneficiary of the policy, according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

Purselley, who weighed 600 pounds and was on disability, was wanted on warrants out of Arizona, accused of conning people.

William Douglas Daniel, 51, of Sallisaw; Craig Neal Hart, 54, of Vian; and David Joseph Danylchuk, 52, of Sallisaw, have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.

Daniel, who is believed to be the shooter, according to arrest affidavits, has told investigators he and Simonin had been having a sexual relationship.

Purselley died on July 25 from multiple gunshot wounds.

His body was found in his home on July 27, after Arizona authorities alerted Sequoyah County.

Simonin told deputies she began to suspect her husband was not wealthy when bill collectors began hounding them, Sheriff Lockhart said.

The couple moved into their house in Oklahoma after Purselley gave the owners some money down and told them he had millions of dollars in the bank.

The three men arrested in Purselley’s death were friends with the homeowners. Sheriff Lockhart said the homeowners were not involved in the slaying.

Daniel and Danylchuk told deputies they went to Purselley’s home on July 25 at about 7.30pm. The plan was to frighten him with a .44 Magnum so Simonin could leave her husband.

Hart then went to the door with what looked like a U.S. Marshal’s badge and told Purselley he was being arrested on an outstanding child support warrant, the men said.

From there their stories differ, according to NewsOK.
