Worker fired for disabling GPS app that ‘tracked her 24 hours a day’

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Myrna Arias, of California, alleges she was fired from money transfer service company, Intermex, last May after she uninstalled job management app, Xora, from her company smart phone.

A California woman claims she was fired after disabling an app with a GPS function that was required to run on her company iPhone and tracked her 24 hours a day.

Myrna Arias was working for money transfer service company, Intermex, last year when she claims her boss, John Stubits, ‘bragged that he knew how fast she was driving’ at certain times after she had installed the app, Xora, according to the lawsuit.

She then objected to being monitored during non-work hours claiming it was an invasion of her privacy and ‘likened the app to a prisoner’s ankle bracelet’.

Arias uninstalled the app from her company issued phone in April 2014 before she was fired from her $7,250 a month job as a sales executive on May 5, 2014.

CNN Reporter Mistakes Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Members For The Crips

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Because all Black people who wear blue are gang members.

Over the past year CNN Reporters have consistently lacked integrity while reporting on police brutality and people of color and they show no sign of slowing down. Today members of the African American Divine Nine sorority Zeta Phi Beta were filmed sitting in Baltimore’s Town Hall discussing reformation of local laws on police brutality for a segment on CNN, during which time anchor Erin Burnett said on live television: “You’ve got the gang members there and about 500 people—it will be contentious and it will be angry.”

As a member of the media, it is Burnett’s duty to be informed about the culture and people on which she is reporting. Assuming the members of Zeta Phi Beta are gang members because their sorority colors are blue, not only means Burnett has not done her job, she’s also done a disservice to CNN viewers, Zetas, and the Black community overall — not that she likely cares much about the consequences for the latter two.

Eddie Ray Routh Found Guilty in ‘American Sniper’ Murder Trial

Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

A Texas jury has found Eddie Ray Routh guilty of murder in the killings of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle and Kyle’s friend, Chad Littlefield.

The jury announced its verdict at around 9:20 p.m. local time (10:20 p.m. E.T.) at a Stephenville courthouse. They were given the case at 6:36 p.m. local time (7:36 p.m. E.T.).

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, and Routh was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

“We just want to say that we’ve waited two years for God to get justice for us on behalf of our son and as always God has proved to be faithful, and we’re so thrilled that we have the verdict that we have tonight,” Littlefield’s mother, Judy Littlefield, told reporters after the verdict was read.

Routh, 27, admitted to killing both men at the shooting range of Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, southwest of Dallas, on Feb. 2, 2013.

Routh pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to capital murder. His attorneys have said Routh, a former Marine corporal who served in Iraq but not in a combat role, was in the grip of a medically diagnosed psychosis at the time of the killings.

Prosecutors said that Routh was drinking and smoking marijuana on the morning of the crime. They argued that he was paranoid because he was high, and that he was angry about living with his parents, relationship problems, money and his job — then exploded after he believed.

Not Again: Unarmed Black Fatally Shot By Cop, Who Mistook Pill Bottle For Weapon

Saturday, December 6th, 2014

A friend who was with an unarmed black man killed by a white Phoenix police officer on Tuesday said cops are misleading the public about how the shooting unfolded and accused police of papering over their mistakes by focusing on details that hurt his friend’s reputation.

Rumain Brisbon, 34, died Tuesday after being shot twice by an officer who police said thought Brisbon had a gun. The fatal encounter started, according to police, when Brisbon fled from his Cadillac SUV into an apartment after an officer tried questioning him about possible drug-dealing from the vehicle.

But that’s not how the killing really happened, said Brandon Dickerson, Brisbon’s friend who was in the SUV when the unnamed officer pulled the trigger around 6 p.m.

“They murdered my friend,” Dickerson said. The officer “just jumped the gun and killed my friend in cold blood and they’re covering up. I hate things to be so political.but, unfortunately, it is. It’s another Ferguson. It’s another Eric Garner,” Dickerson said by phone on Friday. “It’s another incident of police using excessive force.”

Police said it appeared Brisbon took something from the rear of SUV when he got out. The officer drew his weapon, saying Brisbon reached into the waistband of his pants. The two struggled and the cop fired, believing Brisbon had a gun, but which turned out to be a vial of pills.

Dickerson told HuffPost that the officer didn’t approach the SUV before the shooting and that Brisbon had already hopped out to bring food from McDonald’s to his daughter. Dickerson was unaware that a cop was nearby, let alone struggling with Brisbon, until he heard a yell followed quickly by a gunshot.

“I never saw the police coming. They said they approached the vehicle. That was not the case,” Dickerson said.

Brisbon had previous convictions for burglary and marijuana, according to the Arizona Republic. He had been arrested in October on suspicion of driving under the influence, the newspaper said.

Inside the SUV, police found a jar of marijuana. Brisbon had a medical marijuana permit, according to the Rev. Jarret Maupin, who told HuffPost he spoke to Brisbon’s friends and family. Because of privacy protections, the Arizona Department of Health Services said it cannot confirm or deny if Brisbon was allowed to have medical pot.

“What the hell is the point of mentioning the pot if you’re not going to tell the whole story,” Maupin told HuffPost. “What you find in the car, even if it were four bales of pot, had nothing to do with the assault outside the car.”

Police said they found a gun inside the Cadillac.

Dickerson said police revealed these details to offset public anger about the killing of an unarmed African-American.

The gun “wasn’t on him. That’s just something they saw at the end to point to,” Dickerson said.

Dickerson said he and Brisbon became friends in 2010, when Brisbon helped Dickerson get a job at a call center. “He was not what they are painting him to be. He loved his little girls. This is not a stone-cold felon. They took somebody who was a real good person away.”

Phoenix police declined to elaborate about the shooting.

“We are not releasing any additional information on the case. The case will be turned over to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office who was on scene the night of the shooting,” Sgt. Trent Crump said in an email. “They make the final decisions on justifications for use of force.”

Controversy clouds Brisbon’s autopsy as well. On Friday, Brisbon’s mother was trying to delay her son’s autopsy. Nora Brisbon wanted an expert who works with the family’s attorney to view the examination. But when Maricopa County Superior Court rejected her request, the autopsy went ahead, according to The Associated Press.

About 150 people demonstrated on Thursday night over Brisbon’s killing. Another protest was scheduled for Friday.

( — This St. Louis woman’s picture and story has spread through social media, she’s now ready to talk about what happened to her shortly after the grand jury announcement was made in the death of Michael Brown.

Dornella Conners is now blind in her left eye and can hardly see out of her right eye after her and her boyfriend, De’Angelas Lee, stopped at a gas station in the 10000 block of Halls Ferry early Tuesday morning. Conners says as she and her boyfriend were driving away from the station multiple police officers showed up.

“They pulled up while we were coming towards the street, De’Anglas was trying to get away, they blocked us from the side, front and back,” Conners said.

Conners says her boyfriend was trying to drive around St. Louis County Police but police say he drove towards them. Police say the officer, fearing for his safety, used his less lethal bean bag round, striking the front passenger window causing it to shatter.
Conner went to another police officer who helped her get medical attention.

“I’m very upset, very disappointed with tactics that they used trying to get control of situation,” said Donnell Conners, Dornella’s father. “I understand tough job, I understand that it was chaos, there was no reason to fire upon innocent person sitting in a vehicle.”

Police say Lee drove away but he was not the only one causing trouble at the gas station. Sixteen people were arrested on the lot and police say they still do not know who is responsible for firing numerous gunshots at the location.

Police say they have issued a warrant for Lee’s arrest and set a bond for $50,000.

Head Of Mississippi Prison System Charged With Corruption

Saturday, November 8th, 2014

Chris Epps resigned as head of the Mississippi Department of Corrections this week after more than a decade on the job. An indictment against him says he spent much of that time systematically robbing the state.

The indictment alleges that Epps conspired to pass out public contracts with his department in exchange for kickbacks—”taking more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks over the last eight years in exchange for hundreds of millions of dollars in prison contracts.” The Clarion-Ledger gives an example of how brazen Epps was:

In 2008, [co-conspirator Cecil] McCrory sold his commissary company at a big profit, and Epps approved reassignment of the no-bid contract to the new company. Shortly after, authorities say, Epps had McCrory pay off his home mortgage with three $100,000 cashier’s checks and a $50,000 check all spaced months apart.

Epps can take heart in the fact that perhaps he will only be sentenced to spend time in the prisons that he himself ran in what was no doubt a caring and professional manner, and which are no doubt renowned for their safety and tranquility due to the masterful long term guidance of Chris Epps

Sex Trafficking Nonprofit Says 100,000 U.S. Kids Per Year Are Sold To Sex Trade

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

Selling children into sex trafficking may seem like a remote issue, something that happens in far-off places where kids live in extreme poverty and their rights aren’t valued.

But it’s happening right here, all over the United States.

And a new campaign wants people to take note that more than 100,000 children are victims of sex trafficking in America every year.

ECPTAT-USA, a nonprofit that works to stop the sexual exploitation of children, recently released an eye-opening PSA that demonstrates how little most Americans know about the rampant child sex trade.

While interviewing New Yorkers on the topic, many pointed to Amsterdam, South America and Thailand, among other foreign regions, where they believed children to be at risk for exploitation.

The short spot goes on to reveal that thousands of children are victimized here, and that boys may be victimized just as much as girls are.

To shed further light on these horrific crimes, Carol Smolenski, ECPAT-USA executive director, recently sat down with HuffPost Live to explain who is most at risk and what needs to be done to protect these children.

Smolenski noted that vulnerable children, particularly those who have already been subjected to abuse, are prime targets.

“These kids have been raped so many times that it’s my job to convince them that they may as well get paid for it,” a pimp told the organization in a recent report, Smolenski said.

Runaways, homeless kids and children in the foster care system also serve as a steady resource of victims.

“In most of my 14 different placements in foster care homes, I was raped and attached to a check,” a survivor told Malika Saada Saar, director of Human Rights Project for Girls, according to The Washington Post. “I understood very early that I could be raped, cared for and connected to money. It was therefore easy to go from that to a pimp, and at least the pimp told me that he loved me.”

Baton Rouge Police Officer Accused Of Calling Black Residents ‘N*****s Quits

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

BATON ROUGE- The city police chief has confirmed to the Investigative Unit, the officer at the center of a scandal involving some racially charged text messages has resigned.

WBRZ and the station’s Investigative Unit broke the story Wednesday in an exclusive report by Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto.

Wednesday, there were two investigations into the messages.

Part of the string of texts read, “They are nothing but a bunch of monkeys. The only reason they have this job is the n*****, n***** in them.”

The texts also read, “I wish someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out. I hate looking at those African monkeys at work…I enjoy arresting those thugs with their saggy pants.”

The NAACP called for the department to fire the officer involved.

Chief Carl Dabadie said officer Michael Elsbury handed in his resignation letter early Thursday morning. The officer was placed on administrative leave shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Chief Dabadie told News 2 the behavior will not be tolerated on the force, and said he was “sick to his stomach” after he read what the officer allegedly wrote.

Officer Elsbury was a 15-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department and served in the 4th District. He had no prior disciplinary history, according to BRPD.

The messages were sent to someone who is not on the force.
